Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez celebrated his 17th birthday with, among other things, dinner at Maggiano's restaurant in L.A., where the ubiquitous paparazzi documented their arrival. This time, however, one of the paps' photos revealed something disturbing: "a red bump...on Gomez's lip."
Within minutes, Internet rumors spread like wildfire that the Biebs's now official girlfriend had a fat lip. Within seconds, the fat lip story spawned another rumor: that Selena Gomez had been punched in the face by one of the teen dream's jealous fans. Yet another rumor proclaimed the existence of a video featuring Selena's beatdown.
It gets worse. Immediately, thereafter, a plethora of hateful messages appeared on Twitter, lauding Gomez's mystery assailant and approving of her attack. Thousands of happy Justin Bieber fans gloated over the idea of his girlfriend's pain. Many expressed regret that they couldn't be the first to attack the Disney star. Or at least join in.
"Selena Gomez was punched in the face? Hahahahahaha," wrote one true belieber.
Another tweeted: "U GO THE BELIEBER WHO PUNCHED SELENA IN THA FACE!!! U GO GHURLLLL!!!!! PUNCHHER HARDER NEXT TIME:):):) LOL."

Another wrote: "OH i feel so bad for Bieber and Selena, a fan punched her because she's dating him. #disrespectful!"
Of course, as often happens in situations borne of and exacerbated by hysteria, all the rumors turned out to be untrue. There was no Selena Gomez beatdown video, since her disfigured lip was not caused by a crazed belieber's fist--which is good news for Selena, not to mention Justin Bieber. But what about all those angry Bieber fever fans who were erroneously led to believe that the woman who "stole" their idol had received her just desserts?
Presumably, they can still dream. And belieb.
